Megan war 13 und über beide Ohren in eine Internet-Bekanntschaft verliebt. Als ihr virtueller Freund sie plötzlich verschmähte, erhängte sich das Mädchen. Doch der virtuelle Freund war in Wahrheit eine ehemalige Freundin, die sich rächen wollte. Jetzt stehen die Täter selbst am Online-Pranger.

Es hat über ein Jahr gedauert, bis die Welt auch außerhalb des Örtchens Dardenne Prairie in Missouri vom Tod der damals 13-jährigen Megan Meier Notiz nahm. Megan war Schülerin am örtlichen katholischen Privatgymnasium "Unbefleckte Empfängnis" - und hatte einen Traum: Der nannte sich Josh Evans und verdrehte seiner MySpace-Bekanntschaft gründlich den Kopf. Der gutaussehende 16-Jährige interessierte sich auf höchst angenehme Weise für das übergewichtige Mädchen, das als freundlich, aber depressionsgefährdet galt. Megan betete Josh an.

Megan war wohl das, was man ein behütet aufgewachsenes Kind nennt. Als sie Josh entdeckte, fragte sie erst ihre Mutter, ob sie ihn zu ihrem virtuellen Freund erklären dürfe. Mutter Tina Meier prüfte und sah, dass alles gut und anständig war: Josh bohrte und stocherte nicht, wollte nichts intimes wissen, keine Telefonnummer erfahren, nichts, was Eltern misstrauisch werden lässt. Megan durfte ihn zum Freund erklären.

Doch Josh war kein Freund. Was er wirklich war, machte erst rund ein Jahr nach Megans Tod die örtliche Regionalzeitung "St. Charles Journal" am Dienstag, dem 10. November, öffentlich: In einer langen erschütternden Geschichte erzählt dort Steve Pokin, wie es zum Tode Megan Meiers kam. Vier Tage später war Megan amerikaweit berühmt, am Wochenende trugen Associated Press und CNN die Geschichte hinaus in den Rest der Welt.
